Why is it crucial for students to do their homework and practice and study their lessons at home?

The experiences of a teacher having their students accomplish their tasks and extra work at home with their parents, family members or guardians allows them not just to practice and perfected their lessons but also to bond with them. Students will understand their lessons further with care and support from their family longer and meticulously than purely doing it at school. Understanding that students learn in different ways, with different attention spectrum and personality makes it easier for most of them to grasp information effectively when being supported at home by members of their family. According to California Learning Resource Network  published on July 2, 2025 by CLRN team that tasks done at home solidifies what students learn at school through consistent practice and repetitive learning. However, not all students get the same support and availability from family members at home. They experience different level of support  because their family's availability and attention varies in many ways such as profession and education which can manifest challenging circumstances to some while other students may be rewarded for practicing their lessons consistently. Their progress also depends on the type of environment they have at home.  Therefore, students ability to do and practice school tasks at home varies depending on their circumstances and home environment.

But is it really beneficial for students to review their lessons consistently and proactively? It is crucial that students have to review their lessons everyday for retention and better comprehension. Even in adults, teachers for instance require continuous professional development or post graduate education to make them effective and competitive educators. In many progressive countries around the world where their students' academic achievement were higher and better than the rest of the students in other progressive countries, selection of teachers were rigorous so that only top educators were selected to guarantee strong academic results for their students. Likewise, in students' expectations, they need to practice and develop better understanding of their lessons beyond the four corners of their classroom. This will allow them to maintain better and stronger academic performances. And extending those learning activities at home not just solidifies their understanding of their lessons because they are practicing it, but it keeps them comprehensively competitive. In countries like Singapore where their education system is considered top in the world, teachers were selected  from the top third of their class because they believe that teachers must have the talent and skills to practice the profession. According to SG Warrior site, Singaporeans believe that their teachers must possess the capabilities to deliver the required Singaporean education system for their students.  This same principle applies to many of the Singaporean children in the country. Families and their parents believe that while top educators were necessary to provide the best learning experience for them, students are also encouraged to meet the same expectations and level of  learning extended at home.  Their parents not just support their children's school activities but support their children's teachers in promulgating different and challenging school homework so, they can practice their lessons effectively everyday for better understanding and strong academic comprehension.

Homework is not necessary  for some educators because they believe that some of the students do not actually do it themselves and rely on their parents or older siblings and relatives to do it for them. Although this is a common practice among household members but it does not prevent their students for getting exposed to their lessons everyday. The beauty of homework and its significance to learning is not just having it done and practiced repeatedly at home but also it provides exposure to the topic they encountered at school. Students eventually will see their lessons continuously or the parents might ask them about their homework from school but it will justify its purpose knowing that the students will be asked multiple times about what they were learning at school. Sometimes, students deny that homework is available or their teachers did not provided them school tasks to follow up with their lessons, but ultimately, parents will asked and will become frustrated to know whether their students are having it or they were just keeping it hidden so they do not have to do it.

The importance of homework do not just promote competence and academic strength but it also provides values and character among students in many ways. Students who  consistently adhere to this requirement becomes competitive and knowledgeable in their class. They also develop stamina and adopt strong desire to learn new things  because they were extending their brain potentials. They become more outspoken and participate a lot in the classroom discussion because they were practicing it through extensive reading and being exposed to the stages of their lessons repeatedly.  According to California Learning Resource Center, students who do their homework  helps them become more proficient. The lessons they learned and activities they practice in doing their homework allows them to be challenged which requires critical thinking and reasoning for more algorithmic development.

How can a student be fulfilling homework requirement from school? Many students were challenged by the fact that homework is an additional school work that creates burden to students. Nowadays, due to technology and gadgets that fill most of the students' learning gaps, the manual practice of answering homework tasks can be daunting for many students especially to those with short focus or stamina. They feel pressured especially if it was provided for them to do everyday. Aside from studying and reviewing for next day lessons in preparation for topic assessments, homework will occupy most of their time for fun and other activities they could have done at home. Teachers can develop friendly system that students can use to help them practice their lessons effectively. One  proven method is an organizer notebook. One at a time, students will have selected questions and problems related to lessons they learned  to practice and keep record of it for future references. Another method is a binder that contain topics sequentially organized so, students can refer back to it whenever they want to revisit and review their lessons.  Having a structure and system to promote independence for students to practice and remember their lessons everyday will not just help them become organized progressively but they will systematically handle school work pressure with ease and flying colors.

What other benefits can student have doing their homework? According to California Learning Resource Network, having homework also promotes other important learning development of students such as creativity and critical thinking because students learn to explore and garner information and resources to satisfy the requirements of their homework. As an educator, I learned personally how to become effective writer by practicing and developing composition writing as well as researching words from a dictionary when Google was not even invented. Students become resourceful and learn to utilize other resources at home on their spare time that were not immediately available at school. Students who frequently do their homework do not just advancing themselves in learning but also develop more analytical abilities and collaborative skills in their learning development. According to California Learning Resource Network, students can foster teamwork by doing their designated tasks through shared discussions with peers and synthesizing information that were sometimes limited in a classroom setting due to time restrictions.

Overall, homework is not just beneficial but important task to everyday learning development of students. The lifelong contribution and benefits of doing homework tasks by students in all walks of life does not just promote character, responsibility and accountability but it also gives opportunity for them to develop the skills and capabilities that can manifest from a young person with hidden gifts. Sometimes, students shy away from showing their talents in the classroom or they are not adapting easily in a social setting  so, they become less expressive or unavailable to participate in class. A homework can showcase those skills and based on  experiences teaching students in different grade levels, it is surprising and exciting to find potentials among them.

Why  are parents' involvement in their children's academic performances significant to their learning success and development?

The family is the smallest unit of society. And this unit is what influences the foundation of people in many countries around the world. Children were mold and guided by parents in this unit  most of the time. However, this does not dictate the final outcome of their future also. Many factors could contribute to the development of children's academic access, but parents are their main references to succeed because they are role models in their lives.

Parents always have expectations for their children, and they all want their children to flourish in their own chosen careers. But without strong academic foundation, children might struggle unless they were given definite direction while growing up and decided that another career path would be better. Parents provide these directives so, they can follow it unless other people and friends factor in to influenced them outside their family's beliefs and principles.

How do parents make sure that their children can utilize these resources for their growth and development at school? Family bonding is very important in a child's well-being and having a close relationship with them keeps family ties stronger. Problems at home might trigger avoidance from children not to talk about school issues or due activities from parents. They might even feel afraid to ask them for help due to conflicts happening at home. But parents need to be involved and understand that children need them to become more welcoming, to listen to them and become available for them especially when it comes to their development, growth, and changes happening to them school.

How can parents get involved in their children's academic success?

First, parents can work with their children doing homework at home or during their spare time with them. Asking them how school was and their activities at school helps them to connect with you on questions they do not understand about their lessons at school. Second, attend school activities when they have programs at school. Getting involved in your children's school activities at school keeps them happy and more inclined to participate in other school activities in the future. Finally, become an active member of their school's PTA board meeting. A volunteer at their school could encouraged your children to actively involved in many of their school's program and activities. Allowing them to engage in extracurricular activities not just help them develop confidence and social skills but also boost their leadership skills and academic interests.

Parents also can make up with lost time from their work and other responsibilities when they designate time with their children about schoolwork. Although it is known to be strenuous and tiring to have to engage with your children about schoolwork due to work duties or problems at home thinking about bills and other personal issues, the upside of it is that the rewards you get seeing your children achieving their goals and succeed is heartwarming and irreplaceable.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, parental involvement helps children strive and excel in school which prevents children to repeat a grade, more prepared academically, finish high school on time and develop strong workforce ethic to yield potential high earning jobs. Parents who were deeply and actively involved in their children's learning help them develop a strong interest in learning.

This is an important element of a child's learning development. Parents who were involved in their children's school success will impart in their mindset that there is a commitment involved. Parents will be there to see any development, problems, concerns and assistance their children might need so, they will see that the efforts their parents are willing to give to help them at school encourages not just learning but a responsibility and support they are willing to provide for their children's lifelong goals and careers.
